Atlanta, GA – “Carte Blanche,” a gallery-wide collection of new photography from Bernard Matussière, debuts at Wm Turner gallery on Thursday, December 4. The show runs through January 30, 2009.
Bernard Matussière is a French photographer renowned for his black-and-white photography in both the fashion world and fine art community. His relationship with photography began when his mother gave him her Rolleiflex. When he was 16, Matussière apprenticed for Elle magazine in the darkroom. Two years later, he met with Parisian photographer Emile Muller, with whom he worked for a few years. He then left for Tokyo, where he spent two years as an assistant to Japanese photographer Yoshiro Tatsuki.
On his return to Paris, Matussière specialized in advertising photography, shooting campaigns for illustrious companies such as Levi’s, Peugeot, Renault, Chanel, Charles Jourdan, Aubade, TF1, Dim, Interflora, EDF and Compaq.
As a photojournalist for Surgeons of Hope, a non-governmental organization that brings surgery and medical care to indigent children in developing countries, Matussière and his camera have traveled the globe, from Afghanistan, India, Nepal, Colombia and Brazil to Cambodia, Thailand and Mali. Matussière’s soulful images captured during these trips are compiled in the book “Un Hôpital pour Kaboul.” Matussière’s fine art has warranted many other publications, including “Matussière—Photographe” (1993), “Mésaventures du Paradis (Paradise’s Misadventures)” a showcase of Cuba with Érik Orsenna (a member of Academie Française), and “Nudes” (2006).
Matussière’s work has been shown in countless exhibitions around the world, including La Corderie Royal in Rochefort, FNAC in Paris, Edward Carter Gallery in New York, Track Gallery in Paris and Tokyo, and now Wm Turner gallery in Atlanta.
