January 25, 1759
Sunday, January 25th, 2009Today is the 250th birthday of one of the worlds greatest poets, Robert Burns. Last night and tonight, all around the world, devotees of the great bard have, and will, celebrate with a traditional Burns Night Dinner. In keeping with the subject of this blog, art, I present two of three know oil sketches by one of the most influential artists of my life, Eugène Delacroix. Delacroix was also a fan of Burns’ work and painted three sketches representing Burns’ masterpiece, Tam O’Shanter. I know little of the complete history of these images, but I do know they were painted in the year 1849. No finished painting was ever completed. But it is a testament to Burns’ influence around the world that continues with unabated enthusiasm to this day.
Lest bogles catch him unawares…
